Only In India

A first! LuRue was awakened early this morning by mosquitoes buzzing around her ears. Hard to say if there was actually more activity or if there was enough rest from two rest periods/naps yesterday. Though there is a mosquito net over each bed, the gaps between bed and net are huge (net is extremely stiff & short, so no tucking in). Only a few visible bites at any given time, so mosquitoes are actually not a significant problem. Stephen has told us that malaria is not particularly prevalent here, so cases are somewhat rare. Dengue fever is actually more of a risk.

Montana and LuRue have their week at Christ King Primary School planned in general. We've got a shortened version of Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham ready to go, with the end goal of a third movie for Friday. The kids can't get enough of seeing them, especially when Montana adds her special-interest touches.

We have fine-tuned our lesson plans as the days go by. Even though the class textbooks are incredibly technical and the kids are able to answer the questions in the book in unison, we've learned that when we do Charades, the kids have problems reading simple directions, such as "Touch your head". We have come to realize that their level of understanding English is quite basic, so we have scaled down our activities to what is hopefully their actual level. Action songs are a particular favorite, so no worries about understanding there. When the somewhat stern Standard 5 teacher is bobbing her head, flapping her arms, and twirling around during the Penguin song, we know that all is well.

Update: We have been told that there is national testing later this week, so we'll have to wait to do our video next week. We'll be going to a different school for the last three days this week.

On the way back from school, we saw an interesting "assist" of one auto rickshaw to another that was having problems getting started. A couple of times a hand wave indicated: "success", but then the foot came out again, so guess it was only temporary. Finally, the driver in trouble pulled to the side & we continued our way home.

The afternoon was spent practicing for tonight (which actually didn't even matter, because the guitar is drowned out by all the kids voices anyways) and planning the lesson for tomorrow. At 5, Montana, LuRue and Jeff all went down to SEAM. We started with music, but without Marcia and her imposing presence, the kids weren't as organized.

After the music, Montana and LuRue did crafts while Jeff read "Go! Dog! Go!" to a little girl. At 6:30, the kids gathered around to be served some rice pudding.

On their way back from SEAM, Montana and LuRue took some video for their soon-to-come film.
