Backwards in Time

Miami, Florida to Belize City, Belize

Nighttime fell upon us, but sleep did not. Montana tried to curl up in her spacious First Class seat, but what actually happened to her is unknown. There are suspicions that she might have slept a little. LuRue watched an entire movie, but she still couldn't sleep a wink. Saved by games on her Kindle, she made it to Miami.

The 3-1/2 hour layover was filled with a fast-food breakfast from a pizza place and playing games on the Kindle. The flight to Belize was about an hour and a half & this time we both kept nodding off until  our head jerks brought us back to reality. Neither reached the door to Dreamland.

Guess what! More First-Class meals! But this time we would have gladly traded what we got for a PB & J. The meal included a large green salad, which Montana declined joyfully. The only main dish left was halibut, but these two Alaskans have had much better halibut. The one main accomplishment was feeling stuffed to the gills so there's no desire to eat the rest of the day.

We cruised into Belize without crucial incidents, our bags arrived safely, and we were happy to see Mark, the taxi driver, waiting for us at the front entry. He was very engaging, giving us short historical and cultural lessons on the way to the B&B.

Francoise was there to greet us and show us to our spacious room. She's a delightful lady who is very friendly & will help us with planning our days here.

After unpacking & settling in, we walked to the beach, which is a block away. The street was lined with gorgeous flowers of so many varieties. The water is very warm & inviting temperature-wise, but unfortunately the river empties into this area, so the water is brown, silty, and unswimmable.

During our walk we tried to find out what time it was because we were totally confused by so many different sources. We thought it must have been late afternoon because, in our heads, we had continued to travel east. We forgot about Belize being west of Miami and in the Central Time Zone. Now we have set most of our clocks, watches, etc to 3:30pm.

We decided we might get a bit hungry before tomorrow morning. Belgi, Fransois' hostess, gave us directions to the supermarket... about a 10-minute walk away. Unfortunately it closed at 2 pm on Sunday & by now it was 4:30. A bit later, we saw Francois & begged 2 slices of bread with jam from her. We stole from tomorrow's breakfast, but at least we won't go to bed hungry.

  1. Glad to hear you made in to Belize. Hope you are sleeping well tonight since I'm sure you are totally jet lagged. Great pictures. Making me hungry looking at all the food. The Tour of Fairbanks is over. I'm exhausted! Headwinds today but no rain. Yesterday I got poured on for part of the race. I finished first for Master Women (although there were only 2 women in my division). I'm claiming the win anyway! Can't wait to hear more. It looks nice and warm there.

    1. Way to go Corrine! The fact that there were just the two of you says volumes! Take the victory & relish it!

  2. You Troyers are a trip! Glad you're having a good time even with the green salads (which I would have happily devoured!). I'm on the opposite coast and have been enjoying runs on the beach each day as well as interesting and educational workshops and talks on writing.

P.S. You didn't write about that first class dessert in the pic. It looks yummy!

    1. Salads are debatable, depending on the eater. And incidentally the picture of the dessert is deceiving.

Glad to hear that your workshops are sounding worth the trip.

  3. Needless-to-say to LuRue, ALL of the food looks great to me, but then I like a lot of weird things (just ask Gil, my husband, and LuRue!!).

Your room looks huge and really nice. Hope the B & B is turning out as hospitable as you indicate it seems. Having a local person help with your planning is very smart.

Eric, you and I could divide the salads!! Where are you?
